How to Verify Authenticity (Without Sending to a Lab)

You don’t need a microscope to spot real vintage—but you do need method. Here’s what I test in-field:

  1. Shrinkage Test: Submerge waistband and inseam in 140°F water for 12 minutes. Remove, gently roll in towel, hang to dry *without stretching*. Measure waistband pre- and post-wash. Deadstock vs. Repro: The Provenance Litmus Test

“Deadstock” means unused, unworn, original inventory—never sold, never washed, stored in climate-controlled conditions. “Repro” means newly manufactured, even if pattern-accurate.

  • Label Integrity: Deadstock labels show zero dye transfer, crisp ink, and intact paper backing. Repro labels often have slightly blurred edges, inconsistent font weight, or overly vibrant ink (modern printers exceed vintage lithography saturation).
